when this world learns to live as one, oh, better times will come

January 28th, 2022

The Red Chuck Précis

(Weekly lyrics from Janis Ian/Better Times Will Come)

Hey all!

Certain situations aside, the new year has been an upswing in my home. Much of that has less to do with any change in circumstance, coming mostly from relying on efforts to turn inward to adjust how I approach the world and its effects on me. That's not to say that we can all just "think our problems away", but I have found that I have more control than I realized.

Things that help my remember and take advantage of that control:

  • Walks in nature (especially the snow...no, really, walking in the snow and cold is lovely...just bundle up and get some of that outside on you)

  • Cooking

  • "Walk Abouts" with Alice- basically, a morning routine in which I grab a coffee, our dog Alice, and go explore our backyard in the wee hours of the morning

  • Jigsaw puzzles, doodling, or any activity that's isn't the blast of information we're so constantly absorbing in the modern world

I didn't really plan that list and, looking on it now, I realize that most of those things are just various forms of meditation, moments that allow my brain to take a break and figure some shit out without my constantly steering it or throwing more information at it.

What do you do to create those moments? I'm always game for more ideas. Let me know.

Take care, all!

Made You A Mix

Weekly Virtual Mix Tape: January 28th, 2022

The Red Chuck Weekly Virtual Mix Tape playlists are a collection of ten songs I've been listening to this week, crossing genre, era, and taste. No themes, just the tunes I've been sticking in my ears lately.

Available on Spotify, Apple Music, & YouTube.

Support those bands on Bandcamp or their websites by purchasing that music.

Made You A List

A collection of links & reads I've been sticking in my brain the past week.

Good tips for keeping active.

Some fun options. We just ordered a few to try out.

I have mixed feelings about the finale, but I was mostly satisfied. This article mentions a few of the items you may have been left wondering about.

I love it for cooking, but more and more, I can't wait to get these appliances out of my home.
