I'm back!
I built a fort!
Wait, what?
I was sitting at the dentist the other day, there for my regular cleaning, because you've gotta keep those teeth healthy. In both the waiting room and the dental chair, where there was little to do but wait with my mouth hanging open, I realized how urgently I wanted to grab for my phone.
I should note that I don't have any social media on my phone. I also try to do very little in the way of productivity on the device. I mostly use it for media: reading books or articles, listening to podcasts, audiobooks, and music, sometimes watching video content. Oh, and to call people.
I felt the urge to shove some media in my face. I forced myself to resist, not because there's anything wrong with any of those activities, but because I couldn't recall the last time I just sat with myself. And so I sat.
As the kind hygienist did their thing, I found myself staring out the window into a copse of pine trees. I realized just how perfect that little collection would be for building a fort. It was four to five trees, arranged in almost a circle, with a fence on one side and a field on the other. It created a cozy little space that just needed a few walls, maybe a ceiling, and a little bit of camouflage for fooling any marauders that might venture by. But just how would I camouflage my new little fort? And what would I use to build the walls? And what adventures would I have within? Who would be allowed inside my secret base?
Suddenly, the hygienist was nudging me, telling me that I was finished. I had spent the entire time building and fortifying my imaginary space and having adventures like I hadn't in since I was a child. It was great. I built a fort.
The next time you're in a moment of waiting and feel the urge to grab for your device, instead, build a fort. Let me know what it looks like. We can share ideas. Maybe be fort buddies. An adventurer needs allies against those marauders.
