Jazz Cabaret @Vickers Theatre

Vickers Theatre kicked things off this past Friday with a cozy evening of Jazz Cabaret. The free event was a bit of an open house, with guests invited to wander in and out throughout the evening of live piano and singing, with silent films lighting up the screen to create the backdrop.

It was the perfect setting to grab a glass of wine (or whatever your preferred beverage or even movie snack, as the full concessions were available) and settle into the ambience.

Singer Livia Gazzolo hosted the evening, with Pat Leary providing music at the grand piano.

The event also provided something of a preview of the continuing Silent Film Series, with additional dates scheduled for July 26th, August 23rd, and September 27th. At those events, Gazzolo and a host of musicians will provide live soundtracks to silent films from the early 1900s.

10,000 Maniacs live @The Acorn

Across town, The Acorn hosted packed house for the return of 10,000 Maniacs.

The sold out show featured two sets, complete with costume changes, and an evening of the band's many hits, as well as deeper cuts of showcasing their alternative, Celtic, and folk rock talents.

The band's longevity (they formed the same year I was born 43 years ago) was represented by the variety of attendees. By the end of the show, the audience and even some of the always-wonderful Acorn volunteers were dancing in the aisles.

The two-song encore began without lead singer, Mary Ramsey, as founding members Dennis Drew and Steve Gustafson led the rest of the band in a version of "My Mother The War".

Ramsey returned to the stage and ended up filling extra time, brought on by minor guitar technical issues, with a stomp-worthy impromptu fiddle breakdown. The full band resumed after, finishing the night with and energetic performance of "These Are Days".
